Colonoscopy Q & A

What is a colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is a diagnostic procedure Dr. Husney performs to look for problems or abnormalities in your large intestine and rectum.

He performs the procedure using an instrument called a colonoscope, which is a long, flexible tube that connects to a camera. The colonoscope can see through the entire large intestine.

Most people get a colonoscopy as a preventive care measure to look for suspicious tissues that could signal cancer or other more serious problems. The American Cancer Society recommends that colorectal cancer screenings for most people should begin at age 45 and be repeated every 10 years.

You may also need a colonoscopy if you’re having stomach issues that don’t resolve with home care or medications.

How do I prepare for a colonoscopy?

Preparation for the colonoscopy is often more grueling than the procedure itself because you need to ensure your colon is empty for Dr. Husney to visualize the tissues well.

You require a bowel prep before the procedure, which can be done using pills, laxatives, or enemas.

The prep starts the day before the procedure. You can’t have any solid foods while taking the bowel prep to clean out your colon thoroughly.

The day before your procedure, you drink only clear liquids and take laxatives or bowel prep as directed. You should begin having frequent bowel movements that eventually become liquid as your colon cleans itself.

What can I expect during a colonoscopy?

During the colonoscopy, an anesthesiologist administers sedation through the procedure. You need to arrange for someone to drive you home because of the sedation.

In the procedure room, Dr. Husney has you lie on your left side with your knees drawn into your chest. After the anesthesiologist administers the sedation, Dr. Husney inserts the colonoscope into your anus. You won’t feel any pain or remember anything due to the sedation.

He slowly advances the scope through the colon, using air and suction to get a better view. When Dr. Husney gets to the small intestine, he pulls the area back, allowing him to see more of the large intestine.

During this time, he utilizes a laser to remove any polyps or to take a biopsy of suspicious tissues he finds.
